Key takeaways:
Australia’s not-for-profit (NFP) sector is currently grappling with significant challenges to financial sustainability, including unpredictable funding and increasing competition for donations. Despite these obstacles, the sector remains strong, generating $189 billion in revenue and employing over 1.3 million Australians in 2021. In this article, we unpack key challenges impacting the financial sustainability in Australia’s NFP sector as well as some of our recommendations for NFP to stand ahead, stay relevant and make a splash.
Key financial challenges for NFPs:
- Uncertain Government Funding: Dependence on government grants can lead to instability.
- Increased Competition: More NFPs are vying for limited donor resources.
- Pressure for Measurable Outcomes: Funders require evidence of impact.
- Evolving Corporate Partnerships: NFPs need to demonstrate mutual benefits to attract sponsors.
Recommendations for addressing these challenges:
- Diversify Funding: Seek new revenue streams and partnerships.
- Engage Donors Authentically: Use storytelling to convey impact.
- Measure and Showcase Impact: Invest in tools to track program outcomes.
- Build Strategic Partnerships: Develop relationships with businesses that align with your mission.
In the not-for-profit (NFP) sector, change is constant, and challenges are part of the landscape. For many Australian NFPs, financial sustainability is at the heart of these challenges. Whether you’re a grassroots charity or a leading organisation making an impact on a national scale, navigating the unpredictable nature of funding and finding the right financial balance can sometimes feel like trying to steer a small boat through a storm.
At Storyfolk, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside some incredible NFPs, and through those partnerships, we’ve seen first-hand the resourcefulness, grit, and passion that drive this sector. But we’ve also witnessed how financial pressures can take the wind out of your sails—sometimes just as you’re starting to build real momentum. In 2024, this topic of conversation has been present in many discussions with our clients in both the not-for-profit sector and various levels of government. So, we decided to unpack some of the financial sustainability challenges facing the NFP sector in Australia today and explore a few practical ways organisations can weather these storms while staying true to their purpose.
The unpredictability of Government funding
Government funding is a critical lifeline for many organisations. It keeps programs running, ensures staff are paid, and helps you expand your reach. But when that lifeline is cut or restructured, it can create real uncertainty. The reality is that government funding can be a bit of a rollercoaster—what’s there today might not be tomorrow. Political changes, budget cuts, and shifting priorities can all impact the longevity of grants and contracts, leaving many NFPs in a state of financial limbo.
Our advice? Diversify. We know that sounds easier said than done, but finding ways to reduce your reliance on a single funding source is key. Whether it’s exploring new partnerships with corporates or philanthropic partnerships, looking into fee-for-service models, or even creating a social enterprise arm, diversification can help create a more stable financial base. We’ve seen NFPs thrive by thinking outside the box and identifying innovative revenue streams that not only support their core work but also align with their mission.
The growing competition for donations
Australia is undeniably generous, with a deep-rooted culture of giving that reflects the values of our communities. A striking $13.4 billion of charity revenue comes from donations and bequests, showcasing the strong commitment Australians have to supporting causes that matter. Charities, in turn, distributed $9.7 billion in grants and donations, playing a crucial role in driving positive change across the country.
Australia is ranked the fourth-most charitable country globally, just behind New Zealand. We have the eighth-highest rate of people donating to charities, with 68% of Australians giving, and the ninth-highest rate of people helping strangers, at 64%. According to the World Population Review, our level of giving has remained stable over the last decade, with 55% to 60% of us regularly donating, helping a stranger, or volunteering. Yet, as more NFPs enter the scene, the competition for these funds is becoming tougher. Large-scale fundraising events, natural disasters, and global crises add extra pressure on donors, making it harder for many NFPs to secure the necessary funding to continue their essential work.
In these moments, authenticity becomes your strongest asset. Donors aren’t just giving money—they’re investing in something they believe in. Share your story. Be transparent about where the funds go and the impact they have. People want to connect with real, tangible outcomes, and showing the human side of your organisation is a powerful way to foster that connection. Plus, don’t underestimate the power of a small, loyal donor base. Building strong, lasting relationships with your community of supporters can create a reliable source of funding, even in the toughest times.
Outcomes-Based Funding: More Pressure or More Opportunity?
The shift to outcomes-based funding is a growing trend in the NFP sector, with funders wanting to see measurable results before they hand over the dollars. While this approach can certainly drive better accountability and focus on impact, it can also place significant pressure on NFPs, particularly those that may not have the infrastructure to measure and report on outcomes effectively.
Our advice? Invest in your capacity to track and showcase impact. It doesn’t have to be complex—sometimes, it’s as simple as gathering testimonials or using digital tools to monitor client outcomes. Demonstrating the difference you’re making not only satisfies funders but also strengthens your case for future support. It offers valuable insights into what’s working and where adjustments might be needed in your programs.
In the past 12 months, we’ve noticed a significant increase in demand from clients—and across the industry—for impact documents, infographics, and videography. Organisations are increasingly seeking these tools to visually and effectively communicate the tangible impact they’re having. This is a great way of highlighting your impact while also standing out.
The Changing Landscape of Corporate Sponsorship
We’ve all seen the shift in corporate giving—from simple donations to more strategic, impact-driven partnerships. Businesses want to partner with NFPs that align with their values and can offer measurable social impact. It’s a great opportunity, but it also means that NFPs need to be clear about their value proposition and demonstrate how they’re making a difference.
Our tip? Think of corporate partnerships as a two-way street. It’s not just about the funding anymore—it’s about building mutually beneficial relationships. What can you offer the corporate sector in return? Is it brand alignment, employee engagement opportunities, or co-branded campaigns that raise awareness? Don’t be afraid to approach potential partners with a vision for what that relationship could look like beyond just the financials.
Weathering the Storm Together
The financial challenges facing Australia’s NFP sector are real, but they’re not insurmountable. With the right approach—creativity, collaboration, and a focus on impact—NFPs can weather the storm together and build long-term financial resilience while staying true to their mission.
The NFP sector is a significant and growing part of Australia’s economy, underscoring its resilience and importance. Charities alone generated a remarkable $189 billion in revenue in 2021, and the sector employs over 1.3 million Australians, making up nearly 10% of the national workforce. This growth, highlighted by reports from the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), reflects the sector’s critical role in addressing the needs of communities across health, education, disability, environmental sustainability, and more.
However, the pressures on funding are intensifying. Increasing competition for donations, alongside natural disasters, global crises, and an evolving philanthropic landscape, means NFPs must think strategically. Financial resilience can be achieved by diversifying revenue streams—such as exploring corporate partnerships, social enterprises, or fee-for-service models—and strengthening collaborations with like-minded organisations.
By leveraging data to demonstrate impact and engaging in meaningful partnerships, NFPs can not only secure essential funding but also build a collective sense of purpose that helps everyone navigate these financial challenges. Weathering the storm is possible if the sector works together, adapts, and continues to innovate.
