Culturally sensitive and accessible RAPs: Storyfolk’s design approach for ACSO

First Nations-inspired design elements honour cultural heritage while creating an engaging reader experience in 3 spreads from the RAP
Challenge

ACSO needed a design that spoke to their commitment to reconciliation and First Nations self-determination.

ACSO (Australian Community Support Organisation) recognised that their existing Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) lacked the strategic clarity and visual impact required to convey their values. They sought a design solution that not only communicated their dedication to reconciliation but also highlighted their leadership in empowering First Nations communities and advancing economic equity.

Solution

We reimagined ACSO’s RAPs to make them impactful, accessible, and culturally sensitive.

Storyfolk delivered a strategic design solution that revitalised ACSO’s RAPs with the following key elements:

  • Visual Identity Updates: We enhanced ACSO’s branding with cultural symbolism and accessible colour contrasts for those with visual impairments.
  • Strategic Layout & Structure: We reorganised the content to align with the key reconciliation pillars—relationships, respect, and opportunities—ensuring the document was easy to navigate and actionable.
  • Culturally-Informed Design: We incorporated elements of First Nations heritage to create a modern design that honoured cultural significance.
  • Data and Impact Visualisation: We used infographics and data visualisations to demonstrate the positive outcomes of ACSO’s reconciliation efforts and their impact on economic equity.
Approach

Our design strategy was grounded in collaboration and cultural sensitivity.

We partnered closely with ACSO’s leadership and Indigenous advisors to ensure the design reflected the core values of reconciliation. Our approach focused on:

  • Collaboration: By working with Indigenous advisors, we ensured the design truly resonated with First Nations communities.
  • Clear Communication: We focused on structuring the RAPs in a way that communicated ACSO’s concrete actions and measurable outcomes.
  • Inclusive Design: The design was made accessible, with strong colour contrasts and clear typography, ensuring it reached a wide audience, including those with visual impairments.
Result

The redesigned RAPs became a powerful tool for ACSO, showcasing their leadership in reconciliation.

Key outcomes of the redesign included:

  • Stronger Stakeholder Engagement: The engaging design fostered trust and deepened relationships with government bodies, community organisations, and First Nations communities.
  • Enhanced Brand Positioning: The new design reinforced ACSO’s position as a leader in reconciliation and a trusted partner in systemic change.
  • Increased Visibility & Impact: By including actionable data, ACSO showcased the tangible benefits of their reconciliation work, amplifying their impact on economic equity.
  • Improved Accessibility: The redesigned RAPs were more inclusive, ensuring a broader audience could access and engage with the message of reconciliation.

This comprehensive redesign has helped ACSO communicate their mission more effectively, strengthening their ongoing efforts for positive social change.
